February Competitions! #feb

February 20, 2020

FREE WRITING

26
Although I have only been on here about a month, I have definitely seen an improvement in my work, and I feel much more solid now in my place as a writer. I'm very grateful to everyone on Write the World who has encouraged me and reviewed my work.
In return, I would like to do a contest like many of the fascinating competitions I've seen around here (although I have not taken part in any). This contest is themed around the month of February, and I have three prompts: one short story, one flash fiction, and one poem. It will run for the entire month of February, so as to give ample time for writers to craft their work.

Prompt 1 #valentine
Sample Work: https://www.writetheworld.com/groups/1/shared/146111/version/285043
In honor of Valentine's Day, write a romance story. It seems to be fairly easy, right? No. There is a catch. Write a romance story set in the past, which means set before the year 2000. It can be the story of a man going off to World War 1 and leaving his fiancee behind, or a medieval princess finding that she prefers a shepherd to a prince, whatever you please.
Word Limit: 1,000 to 4,000 words.

Prizes:
I have made the prizes for Prompt 1 larger than the other two because I recognize the effort it takes to write a longer piece.

Grand Prize:
8 peer reviews of your choice, 16 likes of my choice, a follow and shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next 2 months

First Place:
6 peer reviews of your choice, 12 likes of my choice, a shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next month

Second Place:
4 peer reviews of your choice, 8 likes of my choice

Third Place:
2 peer reviews of your choice, 4 likes of my choice

Honourable Mentions (3 will be chosen if applicable):
1 peer review of your choice, 2 likes of my choice

Prompt 2 #blackculture
Sample Work: https://www.writetheworld.com/groups/1/shared/146268/version/285104
In honor of Black History month in my country, write a piece of flash fiction relating to/celebrating Black culture or history. Feel free to write about Black history in your country; it doesn't have to be strictly African-American history. I will allow some creative license, but if you chose to submit something relating to history I would prefer it to be fairly accurate.
Word Limit: 500 to 1,000 words

Prizes:

Grand Prize:
6 peer reviews of your choice, 12 likes of my choice, a follow and a shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next 2 months

First Place:
4 peer reviews of your choice, 8 likes of my choice, a shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next 2 months

Second Place:
2 peer reviews of your choice, 4 likes of my choice

Third Place:
1 peer review of your choice, 2 likes of my choice

Honourable Mentions (3 will be chosen if applicable):
1 comment and 1 like of my choice

Prompt 3 #politicalheroes
Sample Work: https://www.writetheworld.com/groups/1/shared/146410/version/285312
In honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday, write a poem on a political hero in your country, whether a president, a king, or a senator, provided it is somehow related to politics. Write about their life and what they accomplished.
Word Limit: 1-55 words

Prizes:

Grand Prize:
4 peer reviews of your choice, 8 likes of my choice, a follow and a shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next 2 months.

First Place:
2 peer reviews of your choice, 4 likes of my choice, a shoutout on my Message from Writer box for the next month

Second Place:
1 peer review of your choice, 2 likes of my choice

Third Place:
1 comment and 1 like of my choice

Honourable Mentions (3 will be chosen if applicable):
1 like of my choice

Additionally, all submitted pieces will receive a like, comment, and review!

Rubric for Grading
Grammar:
3 points for spotless grammar and spelling, no mistakes at all
2 points for mostly okay grammar
1 point for very poor grammar
Note: Lowercase writing is only permitted in the poetry category. If you write everything in lowercase in any of the other two you will be docked points.

Content:
3 points for well-developed plots/ideas that move me emotionally.
2 points for somewhat interesting plots/ideas that are slightly more interesting than reading the news
1 point for impossibly unentertaining plots/ideas that do not stimulate either my brain or my emotions.

Language:
3 points for unique, well-thought out language and no cliches/stereotypes/trite sentences
2 points for somewhat unconventional language or description with some cliches.
1 point for language that is literally one cliche after another. eg. "It rained cats and dogs." versus "It rained like the plumbing system of Heaven had broken."
Note: Slang is permitted, but ONLY in the context of dialogue or a narrative. If I find you used the word "ain't" outside of these parameters, you will be docked points.

Now, a few more guidelines:
• No sexual content
• Avoid swearing, please, unless it is historically accurate (my limits are "damn," and "what the hell").
• No crass/crude humor
• Formatting: Please put #feb and then whatever prompt you are doing. For example, if I write a piece on the first prompt, I would do #febvalentine.
• Please put all submissions in the comments to this piece as well so that I can easily find them.
• Please make sure your piece is completed and in its best form when you submit it. I will not allow you to take it down and then re-submit it.
• No plagiarism. If two pieces look uncannily alike, I will only accept the first one submitted.
• If, for some reason, your piece is taken down by Write the World, I will allow you to resubmit it provided it is before the deadline.
• You may submit one piece for each prompt, but no more than three in all.
• You may submit pieces that have already been written provided they match the prompt.

DEADLINE: FEBRUARY 29, 2020
Anything submitting after 11:59 p.m., my time, on February 29, 2020, will not be accepted. However, if there is a problem, such as Write the World taking down your piece suddenly, you may leave a comment asking for more time to resubmit it and I will consider your request.

CONTEST RESULTS WILL BE OUT MARCH 7, 2020
I will notify all contestants on their submitted pieces when results are out, as well as informing them of their place in the winnings.
