"My work is loving the world.
Here the sunflowers, there the hummingbird--
equal seekers of sweetness.
Here the quickening yeast; there the blue plums.
Here the clam deep in the speckled sand."
- "Messenger", Mary Oliver

"And I will show that nothing can happen more beautiful than death,
And I will thread a thread through my poems that time and event are compact,
And that all the things of the universe are perfect miracles, each as profound as any."
-Song of Myself (Leaves of Grass, Walt Whitman)

Variations on a Melancholic Passerby

October 21, 2020

her mousy hair is stuffed under a cap, with
a faded blue coat draped around her curved shoulders
dirty cheeks, dirty hands, face lined with sadness
she walks right past me, eyes
sliding easily over my watchful form
still, while i gaze at her receding figure,
i feel something stir inside of me,
a residue of loneliness, and
she meets my eyes; she feels it too
but the world drags her along and
leaves me behind, so as she fades away
i manage the essence of a smile, and
see it reflected in her dusty eyes.

his whiskers are matted with
dirt and cigarette-smoke, his
limbs clad in ripped clothing, old
jackets and blankets that hardly
keep in any warmth, after all their years
next to him leans a tired cardboard sign, words
almost indecipherable, but their meaning
clear as the day they were scribbled out
as i stroll over, he opens one eye,
too far gone to even manage a greeting
i drop a coin into his hat, and he
looks up at me, wordless thanks in his gaze
before he leans back against the wall,
a hint of a smile on his lips
i can't help but glance one last time as i walk away,
and i watch him gather his strength and
pick himself up.

along with her comes five;
one dashing along in front,
one dashing along behind,
one tugging at her shirtsleeve,
one in a worn stroller,
one tucked into the crook of her arm
she doesn't hear their cries of unrest as
they drag her down the street,
her eyes are blank and sad inside, and
when her eldest son meets my eyes with
a scowl, i see the way she sighs and pulls him away
in her, i see my mother, tired and
waiting for life to happen instead of
chasing it down. i tip my hat
and she nods
one slight motion that warms my heart
she isn't too worn-down to see.

they pass in silence, angry words left unspoken
but i see it in the way they
stand stiffly against the wind,
don't dare glance at each other, rather
glare out at the world
there is no ring on her finger, but
i see the tan-line from one, once loved,
and his hand hangs by his side, as if
yearning for the contact of hers
she sees me first, and looks away,
but when he looks over, he offers me
a faint look of desperation
i respond with simply one eyebrow raised,
hardly a movement at all
but as they walk away, i see his hand
find hers
and she almost smiles.

his eyes are sad and broken, looking
straight into mine, eyes that have seen too much
his hair is sprinkled with gray, his face creased with age,
but he moves with a slow gracefulness
he wears a long, brown coat, patches on the elbows,
and thick, black boots, worn at the toes from use
melancholy is etched into every vein in his body,
every cell in him protests against the speed of life
so he sits, every day, on the side of the street and watches
the world spin around him, pulling everyone along
he merely exists and the world exists and they
exist in spite of, and because of, one another
but life has taken its toll, and
his years are beginning to show. i see it in his
eyes, blue and faded, like a woman's coat. i see it in his
whiskers, matted with memories like smoke. i see it in his
sigh, already almost given up. i see it in his
anger, unforgiven and unmoving.
the same as all the people he sees
i turn away from the mirror and sigh.
so sorry i haven't posted in so long :\ i have been really busy with school and... life *sigh* i hope you like this, though! :)

oh the description here is so detailed and so excellent in the way that it builds up the characters as well, really offers you insight into their lives just through a quick stanza of imagery, and the emotion packed into this poem as well- excellent work!

wow beautiful writing as per! your character details here are just phenomenal. you've forensically studied every insignificant feature, emotion and habit of each of these characters to make them significant enough to give the reader an insight into their lives!

re: Paisleyyy!! awwh your comments are the sweetest! i'm so happy you enjoyed the poem! i actually had it published a while ago (a few months ago) but unpublished it because i cringe when i write about romance-ish poetry or stories, because i've never actually experienced anything like it lol. all i write about is either crushes in my head, daydreams or just stuff i've learned from cringey teenage rom-coms and disney films lol! hope you're well <33

If this is the kind of stuff you drop on us every time you're a bit inactive, you are 100% forgiven.

Jk jk I forgive you either way lol. But this is amazing.

This moved me so much. My heart is moved into my throat, and my body is moved into the scene. I have too many favorite lines to quote without taking up an absurd amount of space with my comment.
