Hi, there. You're either someone whose eyes happened to stumble upon this section or someone who's quite a curious being. Well, if you're here now, you might as well continue reading, right?
Ahem.
First, they said she was too normal.
With normal hair,
normal eyes,
a normal life.
Then they said she was too quiet,
that it was weird,
how she could hold the secrets of the world,
in just her silence.
Then they said she needed to hold back,
keep her words in her mouth,
swallow the questions down her throat.
Then they said she was too young,
to understand
the world around her.
Then they said she was old enough,
to know how to earn money,
to know how to clean,
to know how to look after herself.
She was alone from this point on.
Then they said she was selfish,
only focusing on herself,
not her brothers,
her sisters,
her family.
Then they said she was too poor,
wasting all her money,
buying food,
buying garments,
buying toys to entertain her siblings.
Then they said she was too ambitious,
striving too high,
reaching for the stars above her,
not the branches of the trees
that she could grab with her hand.
No one can reach the stars, they said.
Aim lower, they said.
For once, she ignored their calls.
Ignored the way they put her down.
She kept reaching for the stars,
until one day,
the tips of her fingers
brushed against them.

This is incredible. I recently took a break from WTW, and this is the first piece I have read since coming back. You have inspired me in ways that words cannot describe.
Congratulations on earning the Writer Pick! Your poem is very inspirational and effectively zooms in on the theme that everything you do seems wrong or doesn't fit within the boxes of society. I love how you end the poem o an inspirational note; this piece truly uplifts and empathizes with many people across the world. Keep writing & sharing!
