Sanitize!

Sanitize
 is the skin
of an elderly alligator
on a teenaged human.
It's skin splitting apart 
at the knuckles and finger joints,
forming tiny cuts on my hands
accompanied by fluorescent red dots of blood.

it's a call to action,
a call to fight,
fight for right
and avoid the plight
that stays with us day and night
a motto to convince us we're alright.


Sanitize!

Sanitize sent me to war
with my wounded hands,
armed with warm water
and lemon-scented...

PROMPT: Poetry and Spoken Word Competition: 2021

Sanitize feels like the skin of an elderly alligator
on a teenaged human. It hurts like skin splitting apart 
and forming tiny cuts on your hands
accompanied by fluorescent red dots of blood.
It carries a burden with its eight letters, whispering,
wash your hands or spread germs, wash your hands or spread germs.

And for the past year, I've had dry, cracked hands.

I went to war with my wounded hands,
armed with warm water and lemon-scented soap.
